The 5 Books I’ve Most Enjoyed This Year

Honorable Mention

I’ve picked up a lot of good books by reading the recommendations of others. In order to pay that forward, here are the five books that I most enjoyed reading this year, along with a couple honorable mention selections. I hope you enjoy them as much as I did!

Honorable Mention:

Make Your Bed: Little Things That Can Change Your Life…And Maybe The World by Admiral William H. McRaven

A Navy Seal active in war time, and eventual leader of the Seal training program, Admiral William McRaven has a wealth of leadership insights to share. This short book revolves around 10 lessons picked up during his military career. The chapters are practical and well written. It’s an inspiring book that you can return to time and again. Also, it actually makes me want to make my bed each morning (a fringe benefit and possible reason to buy this book for your husband)

Silence by Shusaku Endo

A classic tale about the challenges of faith during perilous times. Endo’s fictional account taken from historical events, tells the story of missionaries to Japan during the 17th century. It is both gripping and thought provoking. The story was ably put to film by Martin Scorsese in the past year. The book is still well worth the time. Suffering for your faith is a challenge, but what would you do if your faith could potentially cause damage to others?

Poet’s Corner by John Lithgow

Lithgow pulls together a wonderful collection of poetry and pairs it with a bit of history about each poet resulting in an enjoyable entrance into poetry for beginners. The selections also guarantee that experienced lovers of poetry will not be disappointed.
